After the violent post-electoral crisis in 2011, the President, SEM Alassane Ouattara, confided an important mission in Abidjan to the national football team of Cote d’Ivoire,
known as the Elephants. This mission consists of winning the African Cup of Nations taking place in Gabon and in Equatorial Guinea to ensure national reconciliation. Indeed, this victory should play a key role in the reconciliation process in the sense that football is perceived as a unique occasion to appease and reconcile the divided country.
Thus, the president and his government promised the enormous 150 million CFA Francs, the country’s currency, to the national team, if they win the competition.
Even though the Ivoirian team is one of the favourites, past disappointments, with the Elephants being prematurely eliminated, do not convince the population of a guaranteed victory. The government has therefore been mobilizing populations to massively support the national team announcing it as a turning point for the country. Large screens have been set up in the town center to allow the population to gather and follow the games.
After the turmoil, I do hope that my country is now ready for celebrations.
